St. Catherine's receives Bender Family Grant for Expressive Arts Therapy

St. Catherine's Center for Children has been selected to receive a $6,480 grant from The Bender Family Foundation to support the agency's Expressive Arts Therapy Program. The Bender grant is administered through The Community Foundation of the Greater Capital Region.

Children and families served by St. Catherine's often have histories of trauma. Their struggles, with problems ranging from homelessness and neglect to behavioral and mental health issues, require a therapeutic treatment approach. Expressive arts offers children and adults the opportunity to explore their deepest feelings through a creative process with the aid of an art therapist. The therapist encourages the use of art to help clients reconcile emotional conflicts, manage behaviors, strengthen social skills and reduce anxiety, and foster self-awareness and promote self-esteem.

Last year, 80 children and 12 adults participated in St. Catherine's Expressive Arts Therapy Program.

The Bender Family Foundation works to foster, preserve and fund the arts, culture, education, history and environment of the New York State Capital Region. Grants to organizations that address those needs usually range from $5-$10,000.
